I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Social Studies Education at the University of Georgia with an interest in understanding the practices and challenges of geography teachers. I invite you to participate in a dissertation research study titled, Geography Teacher Practices: A Design-Based Research Study. You are receiving this e-mail because you have been identified as a geography teacher or someone who teaches a course with significant geography content. Your e-mail address was obtained through public records.
As a geography teacher, your experiences are valuable to this research. Your participation will involve taking a survey and should take no more than 20-25 minutes to complete. To qualify for this research study, you must currently teach at least one geography class, or a class with substantial geography content (e.g.: middle grades or elementary grades social studies). In the survey, you can identify whether or not you would like to be considered for other aspects of this research project; specifically focus group interviews and/or in classroom observations and interventions. All participation is voluntary. You can refuse to participate or withdraw participation at any time.
The findings of this project aim to improve the preparation and development of effective geography teachers. The results of this survey will be reported in aggregate form only. Your responses will be used for research purposes only and will be confidential; no effort will be made to track your responses and no records will be maintained on any person completing the survey. The results of the research study may be published, but your name or any identifying information will not be used. In the survey, you are requested to report information about your educational history, current pedagogical practices, and challenges in the teaching of geography; there is little or no risk to you as a respondent.
